Secure File Synchronisation Host
Description
Motivation
Some people's Syncthing clusters lack an always-on device, which can lead to the following problem.
- Devices A and B are on and start with a synchronised copy of a file.
- A is turned off.
- The file is edited on B.
- B is turned off.
- A is turned on.
- A still has a stale copy of the file but will not receive the newer copy until B is turned on again.
- Worse, the file might get edited on A before B is turned on, leading eventually to a conflict.
A solution is to ensure that there are never zero devices turned on, or more simply to designate one device as always-on.
Service
If you don't want to run your own always-on device, you can use the commercial service I provide here, which is the secure use of my own always-on device.
Your devices should be configured to treat mine as untrusted.
That way, they will only ever send it your data in encrypted form.
Neither I nor my device nor anyone who may physically steal it will be able to read or tamper with your data.
Pricing
The price is based on how much data you have in total over all your Syncthing folders and how many Syncthing devices you have.
data(GiB) | folders | devices | monthly-price |
01 | 08 | 04 | $07 |
04 | 16 | 08 | $15 |
16 | 32 | 16 | $73 |
Limitations
- I only allow folders with Syncthing's randomly generated folder IDs. So e.g. the folder with ID "default" is not allowed. You may choose your own folder label and path, but the folder ID must be a randomly generated one.
- I can't offer Syncthing support or diagnose or fix hypothetical bugs in Syncthing itself. I am not a Syncthing programmer.

Operation
Procedure
- On each of your devices, share each folder directly with all other devices that are meant to have them. That will save your network bandwidth and mine.
- Think up a good encryption passphrase to hide the plain form of your data from me. Never reveal it to me. Only your own devices should ever be told it.
- My device ID is MGHPH57-PLBYYHH-H6LC54R-RDZJ5CH-ISJ7KVD-6BZOFP3-MIDXHZ4-AEZMLQT . Tell your devices about mine and share whichever folders you wish to with it as follows. On each of your devices in turn,
- Add mine as an untrusted remote device.
- Do select the Advanced > Untrusted checkbox.
- Do not select the Sharing > Introducer checkbox.
- Share each of your desired folders with my device, correctly setting the encryption passphrase each time.
- Register/login below to tell me all your device and folder ID's in order for my device to accept the sharing requests from yours.
- My device will then accept your encrypted data and your devices will remain in sync with it.
- Payment: Before the seventh day of use, please send a PayPal payment for the desired whole number of months as per the Pricing section above in any currency to vibs29 (at) hotmail (dot) com stating the first six characters of your account access token.
